ARTH 577
Displaying Gender
Rochester Institute of Technology · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course brings together two areas of art historical scholarship: the study of gender in representation, and the critical examination of exhibitions and museums. Focusing on examples primarily from the nineteenth century to the present day, students will be encouraged to think about femininities and masculinities as well as non-binary gender identities as manifestations of gendered stereotypes and ideals. Through readings, possible museum visit(s), class discussions, and/or guided individual research, questions of gender in exhibitions will be considered in relation to other aspects of identity including sexuality, race, and class.
