Catalog description

Presents drug classifications and effects on various body systems. Emphasis is placed on therapeutic, side, and adverse effects of drugs in each classification. Routes of drug administration and variables that influence drug actions are covered, as well as dangerous drug interactions and nursing implications related to each drug. Education for clients, family, and others about their medications, effects of medications, and correct administration are included. Safety precautions for decreasing the incidence of errors in medication are stressed. Students will perform advanced medication calculations to demonstrate competency regarding safe dosing parameters. The application of the nursing process for assessing the learning needs of the client and the effects of all pharmacologic interventions are included. Additionally, the course covers the role of the Practical Nurse in the initiation and maintenance of intravenous (I.V.) therapy infusions, along with the legal ramifications of this responsibility. Emphasis is placed on anatomy and physiology specific to I.V. infusions and the correct procedures for I.V. therapy to maintain client safety. Students demonstrate nursing skills necessary to perform venipuncture. A 30-hour supervised lab performance is also part of this course.
