Catalog description

Presents nursing theory related to the care of the perioperative client and the adult medical/surgical client experiencing alterations in respiratory, integumentary, and genitourinary functions, along with principles of fluid and electrolytes/acid-base balance. The course covers appropriate pharmacologic agents related to these systems and their actions, uses, and side effects; client education on proper nutrition and diet modifications related to the use of these medications; and proper nutrition and diet therapy necessary for health restoration and maintenance. Nursing implications for discharge planning and client education for the promotion of health are stressed. This course includes a 180-hour clinical component. The clinical portion of the course builds on the nursing care theory and skills discussed in Basic Fundamentals of Practical Nursing I, Advanced Fundamentals of Practical Nursing II, and the theory portion of this course. Using the nursing process, students perform basic and increasingly advanced clinical nursing skills in approved health facilities under the supervision of the instructor. The student begins to use the nursing process to plan and implement safe nursing care. This course requires a fee for learning materials. Students must pass both the theory and clinical components of this course with 80% in each component to successfully complete the course and advance in the Practical Nursing program.
