Catalog description

Introduce basic concepts of care for the adult population, including measurements of physiological statistics and documentation of these findings, basic nutritional intake/output, proper use of body mechanics, bed-making, and infection control. Theory and supervised skills lab experiences focus on providing basic nursing skills to meet the physiological, psychosocial, socio-cultural, and spiritual needs of clients in various health care environments. Infection control, communication and interpersonal skills, safety procedures and clients’ rights are presented. Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) guidelines are presented as an application of the nursing process in the management of clients with health alterations. Concepts essential for the safe performance of nursing procedures and for the prevention of illness and/or the transfer of disease to others are included. Modes of microbe transmission, isolations techniques and infection control measures are covered. Health care environments utilized for the clinical component include long term and skilled-care nursing facilities. This course includes 20-hour skills lab experience, a 40-hour clinical component, and a fee for the Certified Nurse Assisting exam. Students must pass both the theory and clinical components of this course with at least 80% to progress in the Practical Nursing program. Students must earn 70% or higher to test for the nurse assistant certification exam as directed by the Louisiana Department of Health.
