Organ Literature I

Catalog description

This course will foster an understanding of musical styles and organ building from the first surviving sources of the 14th century through the 20th century; it will trace the development of repertoire, the influences of organ design, and will contextualize how the preceding had a direct bearing on the development of technique and schools of playing throughout the centuries. The primary goal of this course is to survey selections from various national traditions in order to broaden our knowledge of the repertoire as a whole. Successful completion of this course will enable the student to engage more fully as a performer, listener and lecturer, fostering an ability to identify repertoire styles, and to enumerate the stylistic differences in both national styles of organ building and compositions.
