Producing for Film and Television

This course studies the role of the producer, often the instigator and driving force of any film or television production. From conceiving a project to accounting for income streams years after a project’s completion, producers are involved with a wide range of creative, technical, and business issues in the film and television industries. Balancing the creative and practical, this course will cover the range of a project from development through distribution and recoupment. Topics include the development process, methods of assembling and securing talent, film financing structures, contracts and negotiations, basics of scheduling, budgeting, production management, standard film and television accounting practices, and marketing and distribution. Various types of projects will be explored; full budget studio projects, low budget indies, international co-productions, and films that lie between and around these poles.
