Catalog description
This course studies English in its current state, including ongoing processes of language change, the status of English in the United States and globally, and English’s varieties in vernaculars and dialects. It examines ongoing changes in sound, words, and syntax. Through readings and class activities, students will be introduced to language structures, ideas of a linguistic standard, speech communities in different locations and contexts, language codes and their switching, and other topics.
