Counseling for Addiction: Practices and Principles

Catalog description

This course focuses on counseling prevention and intervention strategies for clients facing addiction, in addition to reviewing factors pertinent to the etiology and maintenance of addiction. Topics include biology and addiction, the brain and addiction, comorbidity of mental health disorders and addiction, and sociocultural issues pertinent to addiction. The course also attends to the impact that addiction has on clients, including developmental, physical, social, and academic and/or career effects, and reviews the influence of addiction on the client’s family and others in relationship with the individual facing addiction. The course emphasizes approaches for counseling prevention and intervention, including assessment, psychoeducation, mutual help groups, and various counseling strategies for client care.
