Catalog description

This course explores the intersection of religion, sports, and social justice, focusing on the 20th and 21st centuries. We will pay close attention to issues of race and gender, considering how authority and power interact with these phenomena within the arena of sports. We will ask how and why athletes have used their platform to advocate for social justice and how that has intersected with religion. We will consider examples from various sports, including basketball, tennis, judo, baseball, boxing, and football.
