Catalog description

This course assesses the condition of democratic institutions in the United State and other advanced capitalist nations, with specific attention to long-term trends regarding economic inequality, ecological sustainability, racial inequities, and trust in democratic institutions. It then considers community wealth building as both a method of community-driven problem solving addressing identified community needs and as an emerging policy paradigm, drawing on both theoretical discussions and practical examples from the United States and other nations. Readings will draw on democratic theory, political science, political economy, social movement theory, and other disciplines as appropriate. Engagement in community wealth building-related activities in Richmond and the surrounding area will generally be a component part of the course; this may take the form of direct engagement or policy research.
