Explores the history and original understanding of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments. The aftermath of the Civil War witnessed the adoption of three revolutionary amendments that transformed the structure of American freedom. The Thirteenth Amendment eradicated slavery along with its badges and incidents. The Fourteenth Amendment established birthright citizenship and announced the nationalized protection of individual liberty. The Fifteenth Amendment guaranteed black males the vote, not only in the South but throughout the United States.
