Assessment & Methods in Social-Emotional Development in Early Childhood

Students’ social-emotional development has a profound impact on their academic growth, relationships with peers and teachers, and eventual measures of life satisfaction. This is why it’s so important for schools to provide explicit, systematic intervention to support students’ social-emotional growth and development. In this course Relay students will analyze ways to plan and implement systemic, responsive, developmentally appropriate social emotional learning. They will begin by exploring and administer assessments to learn more about their students’ social-emotional development. Then, Relay students will use this information to develop a long-term instructional plan to support social-emotional development for a small group of students and an individual student. Relay students will learn about instructional practices and routines that support social-emotional learning, collaborating with others to plan interventions that support social-emotional skill development. Finally, they will explore the importance of transition planning and how to collaborate with caregivers.
