Sociology of Mental Health

Catalog description

This course examines how mental health is defined and measured, what factors influence mental health and how the mental health system and policies affect the treatment of people with mental illnesses. Mental health is often viewed as a personal characteristic of individuals, but students will consider evidence that suggests it is greatly influenced by social content. Social factors influence whether individuals experience symptoms of poor mental health, how they and others in society react to the symptoms, and what treatments are available. No prerequisite. (Offered every odd fall term.)
