Are religious texts inherently patriarchal or is patriarchy one lens through which one can read religious texts? Can one also apply a feminist lens to religious texts? How have Jewish, Christian, and Muslim theologians countered patriarchy - in the name of God - by reclaiming what they believe are the core values of their religions? This course examines how women from diverse religious traditions engage with religious texts from a feminist lens. This course will introduce students to feminist approaches to the study of religious texts, examine debates and points of contention both within and without this scholarly community. Prerequisite: None. (Offered every odd fall.) Credit: 4.
