Catalog description
This course introduces students to contemporary political conditions in Latin America and examines major theoretical explanation for political and economic development in the region. How can we explain the emergence of democratic governments after years of authoritarianism? How democratic are these governments? What is the relationship between democratization (political liberalization) and free market policies (economic liberalization)? What are the most serious threats to continued economic, social, and democratic process? Country emphasis will vary. No prerequisite. (Offered every odd fall term.) Credit:
