In the months following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, giving the War Department sweeping authority to detain and exclude persons suspected of espionage. The decision led to the internment of more than 100,000 Japanese Americans for the duration of World War II. This course explores the history of Asian immigration to the United States, the social, legal, and political forces that led to the forced removal of Japanese Americans in the 1940s, and the legacies internment left in the decades following the end of the war. No prerequisite. (Offered every other fall semester.)
