Writing Nature

Catalog description

The natural world surrounds us, but where do we belong in it? In this class, we’ll explore our places and roles in nature, through readings and our own writings. We’ll write sketches, keep a visual/written journal about our time in nature, and compose several longer pieces, including one that combines the visual and verbal. Our readings will draw from two wells: nature writings in several traditions—Asian, western European, and American; as well as biological and ecological writings. As a class, we’ll take a field trip to a natural sight, to supplement our own individual engagements with nature. To help us in our writing, we’ll have workshop discussions of your works-in-progress. Prereq: ENG 204 or permission of the instructor. (Offered every even spring term)
