Global Women’s Writing: Literature, Politics, & the British Empire: This course examines the role of women in the literary and political landscapes of Britain and its colonies in the nineteenth century. We will explore the wide range of genres— including memoirs, novels, poems, diaries, domestic manuals, and journalism—produced by both British authors and by women from across the British Empire. By attending to this diverse network of voices and genres, we will enrich our understanding of the ways in which women’s literary contributions shaped geo-political conversations on issues ranging from empire, race, science, technology, and medicine. In doing so, we will also interrogate our received beliefs about what constitutes “nineteenth-century literature,” and complicate our Western-centric narratives of literary history. Prereq: QEN 101.
