Catalog description

Extends the basic biochemical concepts learned in Foundations of Biochemistry. Students will gain an ability to describe and connect additional biochemical pathways, for example gluconeogenesis, fatty acid metabolism, the pentose phosphate pathway, and nitrogen cycling, and their important molecules (enzymes, cofactors, and pathway intermediates). Students will iillustrate how proteins and nucleic acis bind to themselves or ligands through a thermodynamic lens. The course will also give practical knowledge of select biochemical techniques. These skills will be developed through a mixture of reflective reading, lecture, in-class problem-solving, guided at-home exercises, and more. Prerequisite: CHM 311, CHM311L. (Offered every even fall term.)
