This course offers students opportunities to build practical skills in dismantling institutional, systemic, and structural manifestations of mutually reinforcing oppressions such as racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism and homophobia, ableism, anti-immigrant bias, religious bigotry, and others rooted in hatred. Case studies of social justice-focused change initiatives in the US and globally are analyzed from intersectional perspectives to identify successful and unsuccessful strategies and this analysis informs design of specific interventions. Focus is on enabling students, through social engagement, to be effective agents of change in their communities, professions, and civil society at large. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Define feminism. 2. Explain how lived experience, social institutions, and oppression are structured by intersections of race, gender, class, sexuality, ability, age, religion, culture, nation, and other social locations. 3. Describe historical and contemporary dynamics of domination in terms of personal, local and global relationships. 4. Illustrate how transnational models of feminist social justice initiatives can be employed to ameliorate problems in US communities. 5. Differentiate between the benefits (privilege) and disadvantages (exploitation and domination) of oppression/s for different individuals and groups. 6. Critique feminist anti-oppression strategies and initiatives involving indigenous and non-indigenous agents working together. 7. Design specific, practical solutions to gendered oppression/s that employ transnational feminist principles and perspectives. 8. Acquire practical skills in social engagement to operate as effective agents of change in their communities, professions, and civil society at large. View Class Schedule
