Catalog description

An advanced generalist course designed to provide future social work students with the knowledge and skills for social work practice with people who are subject to various forms of oppression such as racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, ageism, and ableism operating at the individual, community, and institutional levels of society. Diversity, intersectionality, equity, anti-oppression, and inclusion practice are emphasized. This course will assist students in developing greater professional and personal awareness through self-reflection and collective learning. Further, this course will provide students with a shared language and structural analysis of racial inequity and oppression across social identities. These include but are not limited to race, ethnic origin, class, gender, gender identity and expression, culture, sexual orientation, religion, age, physical and mental abilities, caste, immigration/refugee status, national origin of communities and tribal sovereign status. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Appraise the dual and complex, often conflicting role which intersectionality plays in the lives of vulnerable and oppressed diverse populations. 2. Examine critically and assess personally held values, beliefs, behaviors, and potentialities for change. 3. Understand and apply key concepts, theories, and terms regarding the complex domains of diversity, equity, anti-oppression, and inclusion practice. 4. Learn to build on and mobilize the resilience and strengths of clients and populations relegated to the margins, centering clients and populations as experts in their lived experience, to dismantle systems of oppression in social work practice.
