Catalog description

Advanced level course directed towards the use of Spanish in the health care professions. It covers specialized vocabulary from health care fields, as well as grammar and syntax with the goal of developing interpreting abilities. Students will have the opportunity to develop practical skills in consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, and sight translation. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Prerequisite(s): SPAN 32200 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Students will identify and describe linguistic, cultural, social, and behavioral factors in Spanish interpretation for health care. 2. Students will apply cultural, legal, and ethical considerations in Spanish interpretation for health care. 3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of role boundaries for health care interpreters. 4. Students will apply specialized vocabulary in both English and Spanish in domains related to the health professions. 5. Students will review and apply existing knowledge of grammar, morphology, phonology, pragmatics, semantics, and syntax to Spanish interpretation tasks. 6. Students will understand and demonstrate the three major modalities of health care interpretation: consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, and sight translation. 7. Students will engage in authentic listening, speaking, and interpreting practice in Spanish based on health care scenarios. 8. Students will complete error analysis tasks to assess mastery of Spanish interpretation. 9. Students will complete performance assessments to determine mastery of the Spanish interpreter role. 10. Students will prepare for national examinations in the field of health care interpretation. View Class Schedule
