Introduction To Latinx Studies

Catalog description

This introductory course familiarizes students with the contributions to American literature and culture made by Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, and other Latinx authors. Through a variety of Latinx texts, films, and media, students will explore the ways in which various creators represent community, class, race, gender, culture, ethnicity, and the struggle for a bilingual society in their works. The course will also examine the ways in which Latinx have manufactured identities within the USA mainstream society, as well as the development of cultural hybrids and other forms of cultural registers. Representative works of various genres will be analyzed within a cultural context. As an introductory course, its contents will be delivered through assignments designed to reinforce skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving, oral and written communication and teamwork and collaboration. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Gain skills in oral expression, critical reading and translation. 2. Gain appreciation for other cultures within the United States. 3. Gain the capacity to articulate their thoughts about issues associated with Latinx populations. 4. Gain understanding of the Latinx contributions to the US traditions and cultures. View Class Schedule
