A survey beginning with the period of European involvement in the Ottoman Empire up to the present. The course includes the study of political Zionism and Arab nationalism, the role of the major powers between the two World Wars and that of the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and developments in the Middle East in the post-Cold War era. Not open to students with credit in HIST 309. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Explain how historical events shape current Middle East politics. 2. Describe the role that religion plays in Middle East politics. 3. Explain the roles that outside powers have played in Middle East politics. 4. Discuss why the Israeli-Palestinian conflict seems to defy settlement. 5. Speculate as to what the Middle East might look like in 2050. View Class Schedule
