This course examines US foreign policy toward countries in Latin America. Encompassing an analysis of the US’s historical role in the politics of the Western hemisphere, the course pays particular attention to US foreign policy in the twentieth century. Important themes include foreign policy during the Cold War, domestic insurgency and revolution, and such economic concerns as trade and foreign direct investment. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Course Learning Outcomes 1. The historical legacy of the Monroe Doctrine and nineteenth-century US foreign policy towards Western hemisphere states. 2. The Cold War, the containment doctrine and the superpower rivalry in Latin America. 3. US policy toward domestic political instability, insurrection and revolutionary movements in Latin American countries. 4. The nature of US foreign policy towards selected “special” cases, including Mexico, Panama and Cuba. 5. The significance of economic interests to American foreign policy, particularly foreign direct investment and trade. View Class Schedule
