An introduction to scientific problem solving using a computer. Students will be introduced to numerical methods for evaluating integrals and for solving algebraic and differential problems in physics. Typically offered Fall. Prerequisite(s): PHYS 25100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR PHYS 26100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR PHYS 22100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR CS 12400 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR MA 26500 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR ECET 21000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of numerical computation. 2. Take a derivative, calculate an integral, solve a differential equation, find a root, and solve a linear or non-linear equation, using a computer. 3. Gain an understanding of data visualization principles including graphs, histograms, and visualization of multidimensional data. 4. Consider rounding errors and uncertainty propagation when using computational techniques. 5. Gain experience with common programming languages such as python and with data science libraries.
