Adult Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist I

Catalog description

Students analyze and apply advanced knowledge of theory and evidence-based practice to design and implement clinical nurse specialist care for youngest to oldest adult patients across the wellness to illness continuum. Students use advanced knowledge to holistically assess health/symptoms, promote health, and manage illness and responses to disease. Students use problem-solving and evidence-based methodologies to diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate interventions for select disease phenomena, focusing on etiologies of symptoms and functional problems and associated outcomes. In addition to direct care activities, students develop skills related to consultation, collaboration, coaching, and leadership within the healthcare system. Students develop clinical nurse specialist competencies to manage complexities across multiple care contexts, including diverse healthcare settings and wellness-to-illness trajectories, all while synthesizing theoretical and empirical evidence to advance nursing care across the lifespan. Prerequisite(s): NUR 51100 FOR LEVEL GR WITH MIN. GRADE OF B OR NUR 51101 FOR LEVEL GR WITH MIN. GRADE OF B Course Learning Outcomes 1. Analyze problem-solving and evidence-based practice methodologies to gather relevant data, identify health and illness phenomena, and diagnose problems across the youngest to oldest adult patients using theoretical frameworks and diagnostic criteria amenable to clinical nurse specialist care. Create, design, and implement advanced practice nursing strategies and interventions for youngest to oldest adult patients across wellness and acute care contexts, incorporating theoretical and empirical evidence to promote wellness, manage symptoms, functional problems, and risk behaviors. Examine and implement approaches to consultation, collaboration, and evidence-based teaching strategies that optimize health outcomes and meet learning needs of youngest to oldest adult patients, families, healthcare staff, and systems while incorporating patient preferences in shared decision-making. Evaluate advanced practice nursing strategies and nursing care delivery using sound data and theoretical/empirical evidence, while initiating practice change initiatives within healthcare systems focused on maximizing care outcomes for the youngest to oldest adult population.
