Catalog description

Topics in algebra and functions such as axioms, algebraic notation and equations. Modeling of problems, concepts of a function, representation of functions, and types of functions (linear, quadratic, exponential, etc.), number systems, number theory, and set theory. Appropriate technologies for teaching such topics will be used. Permission of department required. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Prerequisite(s): MA 13700 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF B OR MA 13800 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF B OR MA 13900 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF B Course Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the instructional decision-making processes of guided reinvention teachers. 2. Have developed the mathematics that underlies the procedures used for operations involving rational numbers. 3. Apply the fundamental ideas of number theory and set theory. 4. Make sense of large and small numbers and use scientific notation. 5. Analyze and explain real numbers and whether or not the field axioms hold. 6. Analyze and represent patterns relations, and functions (for linear, quadratic and exponential functions). 7. Use mathematical models to represent quantitative relationships. 8.
