Catalog description

This course covers the implementation of cryptographic techniques to secure computing systems. Topics include confidentiality, integrity, authentication, non-repudiation using encryption algorithms. Extensive laboratory exercises are assigned. Prerequisite(s): ITS 25000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C Course Learning Outcomes 1. Determine what assets need protecting, how those assets are threatened, and what can be done to counter those threats. 2. Know the differences between symmetric and asymmetric encryption. 3. Know how hash functions can be used to encrypt data. 4. Explain the various methods of authentication and know the strengths / weaknesses of each (e.g. RSA, biometrics, etc.). 5. Explain how an effective authentication (RSA) policy would inhibit unauthorized access. 6. Define the term, “access control.” 7. Have knowledge of Denial of Service attacks and defense with cryptography. 8. Understand security risk assessment and control. 9. Develop a basic understanding of the various algorithms associated with encryption. 10. Understand internet security protocols such as SSL. 11. Understand how cryptography can facilitate confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, and non-repudiation. View Class Schedule
