Catalog description

This course covers the comparison and contrast of operating systems, the detailed examination of architecture, customization and implementation of the features of specific operating systems. Extensive laboratory exercises are assigned. Typically offered Spring. Prerequisite(s): ITS 24500 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C Course Learning Outcomes 1. Describe the necessary components and functions of an operating system, and understand the interconnections of the main parts of a computer. 2. Define the terms: bus, handshaking, serial, parallel, data rate. 3. Explain how process management works. 4. Explain concurrency as it relates to scheduling and dispatching, and provide algorithms to synchronize between multiple entities without engaging deadlock or starvation. 5. Describe how numbers and characters are represented in a computer and how the memory management works. 6. Know how I/O device management works and be able to describe how a computer stores and retrieves information to/from memory and hard drives. 7. Describe why security is a necessary component of OSes and various means to incorporate it into the core. 8. Describe the role of socket programming in communicating between systems and contrast the protocols and uses of TCP/IP sockets and Datagram sockets. 9. Compare and contrast the memory management strategies of various operating systems. View Class Schedule
