This course will involve study of the nature and importance of the westward movement in American history from the Revolution to the twentieth century. The westward movement will be treated in its varied aspects. Emphasis will be placed upon social and economic aspects as well as upon the spread of government. Efforts will be made to view this national expansion from the viewpoint of Americans exploiting a great land, offering vast resources, and the effects these resources had upon American development. Although the Turner thesis will be discussed, no attempt will be made to pursue a thesis. Typically offered Spring Fall Summer. View Class Schedule
