This course covers major themes in African American history to 1877 that emphasizes Black Americans’ African origins and their experiences in the transatlantic slave trade, American slavery, Colonial America and the early United States as well as their fight for abolition and freedom during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Typically offered Fall Spring. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Gain a knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the experiences of African Americans and United States history as a whole. 2. Gain an understanding and knowledge of the political, economic, and social processes that shaped African American history. 3. Learn how to “think historically” by placing documents written in the past in their historical contexts, and to consider the relationship of the past to the present. View Class Schedule
