Interventions With At-Risk Youth

Catalog description

This course presents treatments and interventions for at-risk youth, focusing on evidence-based and developmentally appropriate programs. The importance of family involvement (including foster families or guardians, informal or formal) will be emphasized throughout the course. Students will identify positive aspects of existing programs, while proposing a program of their own. Prerequisite(s): HDFS 21000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Identify the biopsychosocial risk factors that increase the likelihood of juvenile delinquency, legal troubles or issues, decreases in academic achievement, family stress, and substance misuse. 2. Explain how interventions and treatments for at risk youth are or are not developmentally appropriate. 3. Evaluate evidence-based educational and family resource programs focused on decreasing the likelihood of recidivism, juvenile delinquency, and/or deviant behaviors and outcomes. 4. Articulate the basic tenets of Family Resilience Theory and apply this framework to high-risk adolescents and families. View Class Schedule
