Professional Practice In Forensic Science

This course will bring together the ethical, legal and scientific elements that the student has learned through their previous forensic studies and learn how these elements apply in professional situations. The student will understand how a scientific expert can and cannot present their opinions and findings to the legal system. The student will learn about the roles professional organizations that exist in the forensic industry and how their guidelines become established. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the current issues relating to errors, overstatements and omissions that are shaping the future restrictions and requirements for forensic labs. 2. Understand the professional ethics for forensic scientists. 3. Understand the relationships with regulatory and advisory bodies. 4. Understand the needs and obstacles of balancing research with productivity. 5. Understand the legislative and regulatory trends affecting the forensic sciences. 6. Understand the Scientific Working Groups and their historical and evolving role in forensic science. 7. Understand the value and meaning of accreditation of forensic science laboratories, as well as proficiency testing and certification of forensic scientists in context with current issues.
