An introduction to American literature from the beginnings period to the Civil War. This course may treat significant minor writers in their relation to literary movements and ideas, and includes the work of minority writers. Works selected to reflect the diverse experiences of the U.S. population. Typically offered Fall. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 10400 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C- OR ENGL 10000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. Demonstrate knowledge of a range of genres, topics, and literary conventions from the pre-Civil War period. 2. Discuss those genres, topics, and conventions in relation to their diverse historical, cultural, and aesthetic contexts. 3.
