Addictions Practicum

Catalog description

This course is structured as a seminar designed to include a combination of lectures, discussions, supervision, and constructive feedback. It will include assignments that are geared toward developing each student’s clinical abilities. The first half of class will include didactic instruction, discussion and case presentations, practicing addictions assessment, goal setting, and treatment planning skills. The second half of class will be dedicated to group supervision. Permission of department required. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Continue developing the addictions counseling skills learned in previous courses and field experiences 2. Practice addictions assessment, goal setting, and treatment planning skills with emphasis on adults, children, and families. 3. Develop addictions case conceptualization abilities. 4. Recognize the addictions change strategies available for given clients and to be able to select the most appropriate approach to working with each client. 5. Able to make appropriate referrals for addictions 6. Able to present addictions cases as one would in agency staffings or professional meetings. 7. Work with addictions clients, students, and families with multicultural competence. 8. Practice all of the above In the context of ethical standards of the addictions counseling profession.
