A special course in selected area of education in addictions and pharmacology, designed to provide theories and practical knowledge in selected situations related to the candidate’s area of specialization. Permission of instructor required. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Know principles, models and documentation formats of addictions and clinical mental health counseling for biopsychosocial case conceptualization, including interviewing techniques, and treatment planning. 2. Understand neurobiological and medical foundation and etiology of addiction and co- occurring disorders. 3. Know the psychological tests and assessments specific to clinical mental health counseling. 4. Realize the mental health service delivery modalities within the continuum of care, such as inpatient, outpatient, partial treatment and aftercare, and the mental health counseling networks. 5. Know the diagnostic processes, including differential diagnosis and t the use of current classification systems, including the DSM and ICD. 6. Learn the potential for substance use disorders to mimic and/or co-occur with a variety of neurological, medical, and psychological disorders. 7. Understand the impact of crisis and trauma on individuals with mental health diagnoses. 8. Grasp the impact of biological and neurological mechanisms on mental health. 9. Know the classifications, indications, and contraindications of commonly prescribed pyschopharmalogical medications for appropriate medical referral and consultation. 10. Understand the strategies for interfacing with the legal system regarding court-referred clients. 11. Understand the strategies for interfacing with integrated behavioral health care professionals. 12. Know the signs and symptoms of substance abuse in children and adolescents as well as the signs and symptoms of living in a home where substance abuse occurs. View Class Schedule
