Catalog description

Concepts and overview of relapse and recovery, counseling procedures and techniques, and treatment considerations. The emphasis of the course will be chemical dependencies, including alcoholism. Gambling, sexual compulsivity, and eating disorders will also be explored. Underlying all of these concepts will be a consideration of the impact of recovery and relapse on the individual, family, and culture. There will be an emphasis on breadth of understanding and areas of consensus and controversy. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Understand recovery beyond AA, with an emphasis on spirituality and neurobiology. 2. Develop the counseling skills learned in previous courses and field experiences. 3. Practice relapse and recovery assessment, goal setting, and treatment planning skills with emphasis on adults, children, and families. 4. Understand the scope of relapse and recovery problems, further develop knowledge of relapse and recovery, and understand key concepts related to relapse and recovery. 5. Develop case conceptualization abilities. 6. Recognize and apply the strategies available for given clients and to be able to select the most appropriate approach to working with each client. 7. Develop the knowledge and assessment to make appropriate referrals. 8. Work with clients, students, and families with multicultural competence. 9.
