This course will include definitions, historical roots, theoretical underpinnings, and basic elements of the field of art therapy. Course topics will include an examination of the major contributors in the field, what art therapists do, where art therapists work, how art-making can be used to affect behavioral, emotional, and psychological changes, and how art therapy can be used in the context of various psychological approaches. Permission of Department required. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Utilize the creative process to enhance self-awareness and professional competence. 2. Development of self-confidence in professional modes of expression and practice. 3. Utilize the creative experience to build empathy. 4. Utilize reason in recognizing contraindications/ cautions for particular clients and groups of clients who may be harmed by the particular therapy and strategies created (i.e., suggesting psychotic clients use razor blades to cut through mosaic material). 5. Development of the intuitive process of personal interactions. 6. Exploration of a range of expressive arts therapies. 7. Appreciation of the value of diversity for creative developments in individual and group processes. 8.
