Catalog description

The purpose of this course is twofold: 1) to present theories, techniques, and strategies for working with children and adolescents and their families and 2) to provide an in-depth understanding of the etiology, symptomology, assessment, and treatment of child and adolescent psychopathology. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Recognize the risk factors and the emotional, behavioral and interpersonal symptoms of child and adolescent mental disorders most commonly seen in school settings. 2. Identify culturally appropriate and evidence-based intervention strategies and plans to effectively counsel children and adolescents to promote academic success. 3. Describe the impact social, familial, emotional, and behavior problems have on academic achievement. 4. Understand the etiology of addictions and addictive behaviors with children and adolescents. 5. Recognize the signs and symptoms of substance abuse in children and adolescents as well as the signs and symptoms of living in a home where substance abuse occurs. 6. Identify common medications used with children and adolescents and their effects on mood, behavior, and learning. 7. Identify community resources and referrals resources to benefit children with mental disorders and their families. View Class Schedule
