Teaching Students with Mild to Moderate Needs I

Catalog description

Course focuses on evidence-based instructional methodologies for students with mild intervention needs, including learning strategy instruction, peer-assisted and other social learning strategies, behaviorally-based techniques, and specialized strategies for severe reading disabilities. Additional topics include universal design for learning, culturally responsive instruction, and data collection for progress monitoring. Prerequisite(s): EDPS 26000 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C (MAY BE TAKEN CONCURRENTLY) Course Learning Outcomes 1. Create inclusive learning opportunities, environments, and lessons that include all learners, positively supports behavior, and encourages academic success using consistent and evidence-based classroom routines and methods. 2. Identify and implement differentiated instruction techniques which results in a pool of resources and strategies to be utilized to support students with disabilities. 3. Create a UDL lesson plan designed for whole class instruction which utilizes different types of curricula and pedagogical development, clearly integrating elements of differentiation and understanding by design. 4. Identify and implement special education high-leverage practices which apply the concept of differentiation with an individual student or small group of students with disabilities. 5. Identify and assess the appropriateness of standardized and non-standardized approaches when selecting, adapting, modifying, and utilizing curriculum to accommodate the unique abilities and needs of individuals with exceptionalities or students who are culturally, socially, educationally, or linguistically diverse. 6. Assess performance, analyze results, and report the impact on student learning of their taught instruction; reflection will include strengths, weaknesses, and adjustments for future instruction.
