Identification of young children’s exceptional needs. Study of various developmental challenges and characteristics with a focus on early intervention with resources and referrals. Strategies for adapting early care and education settings for all children and families to ensure education in inclusive settings. Use of the Division for Early Childhood of the Council of Exceptional Children guidelines. Typically offered Spring. Course Learning Outcomes Aligned with the Professional Preparation Standards from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the INTASC Standards. The candidate will: 1. Understand the principles underlying an inclusive early childhood setting (NAEYC 4; INTASC 7); 2. Gain an overview of the range of individual differences (NAEYC 1; INTASC 4). 3. Consider the child and family’s experience in the early childhood setting as well as the role of the provider/teacher/director/administrator in adapting the environment and the curriculum (NAEYC 2, 4; INTASC 4, 7, 8); 4. Understand the formal process of creating an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) as legislated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, Public Law 105-17) (NAEYC 1, 6; INTASC 4, 9); 5. Create file of resource and referrals for working with families and children with exceptionalities (NAEYC 2, 4; INTASC 4, 8); 6. Develop strategies to address individual needs within the context of a developmentally appropriate early childhood program (NAEYC 1, 4; INTASC 4, 7, 8); 7. Interact with professionals and children in an inclusive early childhood setting (NAEYC 1, 2, 6; INTASC 4, 9, 10). View Class Schedule
