Methods of child study used to inform instruction and create positive learning environments to foster children’s development. Explore the purpose and value of developmentally appropriate assessment tools, examine the use of systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies. Typically offered Fall. Course Learning Outcomes Aligned with the Professional Preparation Standards from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the INTASC Standards. The candidate will: 1. Understand the roles and responsibilities of the early childhood practitioner as they relate to ethics and confidentiality in working with young children and families (NAEYC 3, 6; INTASC 6, 9); 2. Explore methods and tools for observation and documentation of young children in different settings and for different purposes (NAEYC 3; INTASC 6); 3. Gain experience with systematic observation and documentation of children’s growth and development (NAEYC 3; INTASC 6); 4. Integrate theories of child development with research-based practices in observation, assessment, and documentation of young children’s growth and learning (NAEYC 1, 3; INTASC 4, 6); 5. Complete an in-depth case study of a young child using a variety of means of observation, assessment and documentation to summarize the child’s growth and development (NAEYC 3; INTASC 6).
