(ENGL 52900). Covers foundational knowledge in language and linguistics for teachers and educational researchers. Topics include structure and functions of language, language acquisition and development, language diversity, classroom discourse, language and media, and literacy-language arts curriculum. A foundation for work in Literacy and Language Education. Typically offered Spring. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the concepts and theories of how second (and more) languages are acquired and processed through an examination of current research into second language acquisition. 2. Examine this research to develop a greater understanding of the issues and challenges faced by students as they learn English as a New Language, and how teachers can develop practice which address these needs.
