Focuses on teaching children who experience difficulty acquiring literacy. Assessments of children’s strengths and needs are used to plan and evaluate instruction. Strategies for helping children develop more mature literacy understandings are applied in weekly small-group instructional sessions. Includes a field-based experiential component. Prerequisite(s): EDCI 36201 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF C Course Learning Outcomes 1. Examine how literacy methods are related to current research and theories, and apply information to classroom teaching. 2. Develop a sound understanding of student literacy needs in the intermediate grades with a focus on comprehension strategies, strategic reading, vocabulary development, literary analysis, content area reading, and the writing process. 3. Assess student’s learning and use this information to design and implement developmentally and culturally appropriate instruction in literacy and social studies. 4. Learn how literacy learning, teaching, and assessment can be effectively and systematically integrated and diversified to meet individual or group needs. 5. Reflect upon classroom experiences, class discussions and readings in order to develop and express a philosophy of teaching that is based on educational research, best practices, and experience in learning and teaching.
