Catalog description
The design of systems programs, in particular, operating systems, assemblers, loaders, and compilers. The role of systems programs as the link between computer hardware and software is emphasized. Topics include: multiprogramming, CPU scheduling, memory management, file systems, concurrent processes, multiprocessors, security, and network operating systems. Typically offered Fall Spring Summer. Prerequisite(s): ECE 37100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- (MAY BE TAKEN CONCURRENTLY) Course Learning Outcomes 1. Able to contrast kernel and user mode in an operating system. 2. Able to summarize the various approaches to solving the problem of mutual exclusion in an operating system. 3. Able to write multithreaded code that makes use of various synchronization mechanisms such as mutexes, binary and counting semaphores, and monitors. 4. Able to compare and contrast the common algorithms used for both preemptive and non-preemptive scheduling of tasks in operating systems. 5. Able to explain the concept of virtual memory as applied to paging and segmentation, and explain how virtual memory is realized in hardware and software. 6. Able to compare and contrast different approaches to file organization, recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of each. View Class Schedule
