Catalog description

(ME 48500). Introduction to classical control theory. Transfer functions, block diagram manipulation, and signal flow graphs. Transient and steady state responses; characteristics and design. Sensitivity analysis and disturbance rejection. System stability. Root locus analysis and design. Frequency response analysis using Bode and polar plots. Nyquist criterion and Nichols chart. Controller design using Bode plots. Laboratory will include design, simulation of topics covered, and a number of practical experiments. Credit not allowed for both ECE 38400 and ME 48500. Typically offered Spring. Prerequisite(s): ECE 30100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Understand major components involved in the analyses and design of control system. 2. Model systems in the frequency domain and to obtain a block diagram. 3. Model systems in the time domain and to obtain a block diagram. 4. Analyze time responses for the first and second order systems. 5. Analyze and design of feedback systems. 6. Reduce multiple blocks to a single block or closed-loop system. 7. Perform system stability analysis. 8. Calculate system steady-state errors. 9. Sketch root locus and use it to find the poles of a closed-loop system. 10. Use root locus to describe qualitatively the changes in transient response and stability. 11. Design control systems via root locus. 12. Design control systems via frequency domain. 13. Use Matlab and Matlab control toolbox to solve control system problems. View Class Schedule
