Python For Engineers
Purdue University Northwest · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Python is used in many areas, including automation, software development, artificial intelligence, embedded systems, and the Internet of Things (IoT). It has remained one of the most popular programming languages for years, especially because of its wide use in embedded systems and AI/ML. This course introduces Python programming to electrical and computer engineering students. In the first 4-5 weeks, the course will cover basic topics such as data types (lists, tuples, dictionaries), conditional and loop statements, comprehensions, functions, and file handling. In the next 5–6 weeks, the course will move to advanced topics, including classes and objects, exception handling, creating modules and packages, and tools for debugging and profiling. During the final weeks, students will learn to use important frameworks and scientific libraries for AI/ML and embedded systems, such as Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, CPython, and MicroPython. Lectures will include live coding demonstrations. Students will be assessed through programming exercises, a semester project, and exams. Prerequisite(s): ENGR 15100 FOR LEVEL UG WITH MIN. GRADE OF D- Course Learning Outcomes 1. Write Python programs using basic data types, conditional statements, loops, functions, and file handling. 2. Understand and apply advanced Python concepts such as classes, objects, exception handling, and module/package creation. 3. Gain experience in debugging, testing, and profiling Python code to improve program reliability and performance. 4. Learn to use key Python libraries for data analysis, machine learning, and embedded systems applications. 5. Apply Python programming skills to solve real-world problems through programming exercises and a semester project. View Class Schedule
