Catalog description

Survey of theory and research in health communication, including interaction between patients and providers, communication in health care organizations, health care campaigns, and cultural meanings of health and illness. Exploration of the communication competencies needed by health care professionals (doctors, dentists, nurses, social workers, therapists, etc.) in the performance of their health care tasks. Typically offered Spring. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Identify and describe the role and importance of health communication theories and concepts. 2. Describe the diversity of health communication research and practice. 3. Understand the ways that effective communication can be used to promote health. 4. Understand the significance of health literacy in health communication. 5. Explore health communication targeted to interpersonal, organizational, community, and social perspectives. 6.
