Survey of persuasion in social movement theory including questions of leadership, reform and resistance, and independent political action. Course considers the historic role that rhetoric has played in selected social movements such as civil rights, evangelism, and trade unionism. Theories and concepts will be applied to contemporary social movements in US and internationally. Course Learning Outcomes 1. Describe persuasion components in social movements, including questions of leadership, organization, and responses by structures of power. 2. Describe the role rhetoric plays in agitation and control in the persuasive appeals of multiple historical social movements (e.g., civil rights, evangelism, women’s and labor rights). 3. Apply theories of persuasion in social movements to assess contemporary social movements in the US and internationally. View Class Schedule
